It is a rare situation for me to find myself entertained by something I've written. It's even more rare for me to find myself in a random club.
With no camera to document the situation, I resorted to writing. Actually my real motivation was that my phone has MS Word on it. How cool is that?
Enjoy.
A comprehensive study in journalistic form of sub level Serbian dance clubs and those who inhabit them.
By Omar Addasi
To start, I present to you an excerpt of my field studies noted during the processions.
10:45
“We arrived moments ago and were greeted in the downstairs portion of the club with a more welcoming appeal than the above ground security officers had given us. Cordial as seems customary, hand gestures and welcoming facial interactions were exchanged. My partner and I as well as our two native translators (one native born, another a convert from experience) headed towards the back of the den to partake in a photographic documentary operation. We were able to avoid direct involvement as seen fit, for our lack of knowledge on appropriate poses (the extending of arms, hands, fingers hips and rear-ends) would have been evident. After photo documentation our guides were overtaken by the growing mass of dancing and socializing. My partner and I were momentarily lost, but found refuge near a citizen of Asian background along the edge of the den. Here we now stand, observing the populous at work, the lights dim, the earth shaking from the roar of their drums.”
10:51
“There appears to be a growing hostility between our female guide and one of the more rambunctious of the other females in the group. Two more females have approached us as well as multiple males. We have been notified by a male of large stature that there is opium in the vicinity.”
11:08
“Our lack of understanding has led us to make a fateful mistake. It is apparent that the natives sympathize with but do not respect those who maintain a connection to the den’s outer walls. We will attempt to re-connect with our guides shortly.”
11:17
“Contact made, lost shortly after. One called ‘foulds’ has taken a liking to us. Note: investigate further into a ‘sweet caroline’.”
11:33
“No progress made. A flurry of lights and a haze have become the norm. One member of the group, a female, was singled out and a ritualistic shaming occurred where, in a circle, members of the populous made a chopping motion bending their arms at the elbows towards the female in the center. The one called ‘foulds’ has been attracting much attention. It is unclear if his cordiality is due to his nature or due to his alcoholic consumption.”
11:54
“It is becoming apparent that same-gender relations, particularly amongst females, are an acceptable practice, and is becoming more common as the alcohol levels rise. No major advancements have occurred.”
11:58
“A game of skill amongst some males has developed. One of them touches another while creating a steaming noise by pushing air through clenched teeth. He who is touched must remain still or there are repercussions. My partner has gained the respect of a member of the tribe wearing a symbolic wood necklace.”
12:10
“A noticeable thinning of the crowd has occurred as well as a rise in the number of males occupying our corner positioning. These males have the appearance of locals and are standing in similar positions as we are, arms crossed or in pockets, one leg raised or tapping. This is a possible sign that we have been filling a certain niche the whole time, performing the correct stances, or a possible sign of the locals mocking us. The one with the necklace has been identified as ‘alan’, and ‘foulds’ has returned to our location.”
12:15
”A very heavy smoke cover has settled causing both joy and unhappiness amongst those inside. The haze is too thick for further observation.”
12:26
“The wall to our immediate left has become a central location for more intense sexual interaction. If the interaction spreads we will have to relocate.”
12:43
“Another noticeable crowd thinning. Very few left around our local. Hydration necessary. Temperatures rising. Possible loss of partner’s vocal ability.”
12:54
“Becoming… weak. Need food. Food and fresh air.”
12:58
“oh shit the cops showed up! hahaha, no joke, wow, fuck writing this funny, the real ending is epic enough.”
